SLE specialism: Early Years Foundation Stage
School: Victor Seymour Infants’ School and Children’s Centres

Current Role:

I currently work at Victor Seymour Infant’s School in Carshalton Surrey, where I am an Assistant Headteacher leading the Foundation Stage which incorporates 3 Reception classes, a 52 place Nursery and 2 Children’s Centres. I also teach in the Nursery.

Within my role I am responsible for observing teaching and learning; supporting staff to share good practice and make improvements in their teaching. Part of this is the critical aspect of developing an engaging and accessible learning environment.

The ways in which I do this are:

  • Mentoring NQT’s
  • Supporting staff through co- teaching
  • Organising observations to see good and better practice
  • Whole school inset training,
  • Foundation Stage specific training

Beyond the staff training I have:

  • Run Parent Education Workshops in School and the Children’s Centre.
  • Supported other schools and pre-school settings with guidance on observations and creating effective Learning Journeys.
  • Instigation of a Yellow Locality Foundation Stage group where good practice is shared and learning moderated. This is now developing to include TA’s and other support staff.

Previous experience:

I have worked in Early Years settings since 1978 when I qualified as a Nursery Nurse, during this role I was promoted to Deputy Officer in Charge in the inner London Day Nursery I worked in. I have worked in a variety of settings from Social Services to Education, working with families and children from 0-7 years. I have also run Mencap Summer Sessions working with children up to 16 years old with complex needs.

I am a trained Facilitator and have run workshops at our Children’s Centre specialising in:

  • Parenting
  • Schemas
  • Inspiring boys to learn and Communication.

I ran ECaT alongside the LA at our school and embedded the good practice throughout our school and with our parents.
During the implementation of the New EYFS Curriculum (2012) I supported staff with the changes and how to capture learning and the child’s voice, along with establishing assessment systems for staff.

I have previously been responsible for DT across FS and KS1.
