Teaching experience

  • I am now in my 9th year of teaching.
  • I have taught from Year 3 – 6, with most of my experience being in Key Stage Two.
  • I have fulfilled the role of SENCO in two schools.
  • I have a Masters in Special Educational Needs as well as BEd for Primary teaching.

Current role

My current role in school is Deputy Head, with responsibility for all areas of inclusion including SEND and Pupil Premium; I also line manage a team of over thirty Teaching Assistants and am the school’s Lead Designated Safeguarding Officer.

Summary of previous experience

Having taught in a school in Newham, East London, for three years (which including leading Physical Education), I was appointed as the school’s SENCO which, working within an ‘inclusive’ borough (there are no special schools or alternative provisions in Newham), was an out of class position. I then moved to my current school, Barrow Hedges Primary School, to fulfil the role of Inclusion Leader. This role has increased in responsibility over the past four years and I have progressed from Middle Leader to Deputy Head Teacher, and now take overall responsibility for all areas of inclusion, as well as other leadership roles.

As a Specialist Leader in Education (and via previous outreach work), I have so far supported seven schools across Sutton and Surrey and a Surrey learning trust where I presented to groups of governors. My SLE work has consisted mainly of SEND and/or Pupil Premium reviews, working closely with SENCOs and other leaders to support their school’s improvement. Between 2013 and 2015 I completed a two year Masters degree in Special Educational Needs, achieving an overall distinction and having my dissertation research project submitted for a professional development in education award; I was also invited to The House of Commons for my ‘contributions to Inclusion’ in East London.
